Heat Mats: Where They Belong and Where They Do Not

A heat mat is a simple device that causes problems when it is used as a general heater rather than as one part of a gradient.

Under one end, never the whole floor

A mat covering the entire base removes the cool end, and with it the animal’s ability to regulate its own temperature. Roughly a third of the footprint is the usual guidance, placed at one end.

Always on a controller

Mats are not self-regulating. Left on a bare socket they keep climbing. A thermostat with the probe against the heated surface is not an optional accessory; it is what makes the mat safe to use.

Mind what is between the mat and the animal

Deep substrate insulates. Heat that cannot get through builds up under it, so the reading at the surface and the reality against the glass diverge. Thin bedding over the heated area is safer and more predictable.

Not a substitute for basking

Species that bask need light and heat from above. A mat provides belly heat, which is a different thing. Check what your particular animal actually requires rather than assuming one heat source covers it.
